St. Peter’s Basilica

For all the times I’ve seen St. Peter’s on TV, was so different in person.  The Pieta, Michelangelo’s first work is the first thing you see.  It is the only work he signed.

It is an amazing piece for the emotion it elicits and the techniques used. Mary’s power and endurance evidenced by her size. The movement of Mary’s body, the place of her hand holding Jesus over the burial cloth.

Many a normal church could fit behind the altar at St. Peter’s. St. Patrick’s could fit inside with lots of space to spare.  On one of the side altars a Mass was starting, in Latin with the priest’s back to the people.  It felt weird, why did we go to church then?  He did give the homily or in this instance a sermon in both Italian and English.  Harden not your hearts which has a particular meaning to me because of my Saoirse.  The mosaic behind the altar was St. Joseph holding the Child although it seemed to be a more modern depiction.  Joseph was very much the Daddy in ancient garb. He looked like today’s Dad, in charge and handling it.  I should have checked for the diaper bag.

I never thought I’d get to say I had been to Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. I was also a ready for a chance to sit down.

I touched St. Peter’s toe and heard Bob scream at me. He hated anyone touching his toes.

St. Peter’s Square is immense and the stone is very white.  On TV I’ve only seen it packed with people.  They hear the Pope speak but they don’t really see him. I was back pretty far to take this shot and the dome is barely visible.  I had turned around earlier to get a look and  I was a bit disappointed because I didn’t think it looked like a church.

I’d like to go back again on a different tour.  So much to see.
